The Ums
Giving us Pause after Wearing Us Out
By: Mut Asheru
Found them on Ourstage.Com

This baby faced quartet (whoops trio at the moment as Brett Vaughn has taken a break to pursue other endeavors) might look a bit like uncomfortable innocents but their music is a full-bodied mixture of various music styles, variant vocal textures, and witty lyricism. Another thing that gives them away is one of my favorite songs by the band ‘Wear Her Out’. There is no way anyone innocent would sing a song like that or the term wear her out for that matter.
A self-professed melodic powerpop quartet, The Ums have the skills to pay the bills – at least someday. They are independent which means they could use more notoriety, booked shows, paid endorsements and bought albums. Money spent on this group’s music would not be wasted.
“It’s all pretty meager. If the music is notable it comes from the music itself and not anything from our lives which are not very glamorous at all,” says Jesse.
They draw from blues, folk, funk, pop, the 60s, and fun to make their audiences walk away from live shows with a tune in their head and a smile on their face.
Having been chosen by Fanatic? And done well on Ourstage.Com, The Ums are quickly gaining much deserved recognition. And they definitely get a super thumbs up for having some of the coolest government names around. In no particular order The Ums are:
Steve Gillespie, Drums, Keyboards, Vocals, Jesse Ricke, Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals, Brett Vaughn, Vocals, Guitars, Drums, (and my personal favorite name of all tymes!)Alex Zacharias, Bass, Keyboards, Cello, Vocals.
This is one of the most interesting uninteresting group of guys I have ever interviewed. And by uninteresting I mean lo-key (hey remember that R&B group? Whatever happened to them?) and regular. But oh-baby get-em onstage and OurStage and see how they Um.
