Graboids
By: Mut

The Graboids (what a name) have an intense sonic presence that makes you feel. Each song on their album “Infinite Delay” pulls out a gamut of emotions as each track reveals its layers. The songs are like instrumental sagas that start out maybe slow and sparse then builds in intensity as they add more and more instrumental and rhythmic meat. The tracks then build to an exciting feeding frenzy before tapering off into its conclusion.
Consisting of group members Andrew Glover, Jim Hale, Matthew Watson and Stuart Watson (give group history here)
Most tracks ebb and flow in the same manner except for one where the group played backdrop to some guy rappin. Can't say much for that track except the guy had a cool accent. Throughout their compositions the relaxed moments expand into limitless space and constrict into well balanced events.
This group has been compared to the likes of Mogwai but we won’t do that. Although their music did put us in the mind of Solaroid with more drum and guitar intensity. Graboids sound is kind of an industrial-ambient-rock thing.
UTM - What are you working on at the moment?

We just went into the studio last week to start recording new songs, very different material from our first album 'Infinite Delay'. These songs are much more condensed, short pieces of music and with tons of melody. Featuring vocals/harmonies for the first time, loops, expanded instrumentation (violin, cello, banjo, keyboards, etc). All still very ambient and spaced-out though. We're excited about this new direction as it's a 180 degree turn from previous quiet/loud/quiet material. New material will be finished end of this summer to send to larger labels.
UTM - How do you classify your own sound (we hate putting artists in boxes, we would much rather them do it theirselves)
Stuart -
Spaced-out noise explorations from the hills of Virginia
UTM - What's one of the truest things anyone could ever say about you as a group and your music?
Stuart -
We're persistent and love what we do in the process.
UTM - Why have you all decided to do vocals? And whose vocals are they?
Stuart -
Our drummer Matthew is providing the vocals, he realized when demoing songs on his own that he has a really strong voice and range so it came as a complete surprise to us all. These new songs have bits where it couldn't really be any instrument except the human voice doing the melody and so it's something that's gotta be done really. We've shyed away from doing vocals in the past as there were never parts for them to go over.
Some of these new songs have actual lyrics whereas other songs are just vocal harmonies drenched in reverb and echo. It's something new we've never done so I guess that's also a reason we want to trek the new ground - boredom of our old style.
