Indiegogo.Com: How to Do it with Others

By: Mut Asheru

A company after our own hearts, IndieGoGo.Com serves as a formidable jumping off point for independent filmmakers.  Yes DIY is great, but what happens when you expand and Do It With Others (DIWO)?  Launched in January ’08, IndieGoGo has the answer.

In a short amount of time, Filmmakers have found success with IndieGoGo’s DIWO model.  They can effectively connect with their audience, grow their contacts and seek financing for their projects.  Minna Packer’s The Lilliput, a movie based on the true story about "a Jewish dwarf who survived the Holocaust by hiding in garbage cans," raised $10,000 is just 45 days.

Note to filmmakers, funding isn’t just going to magically appear.  It still takes work but with IndieGoGo racking up success stories and cementing valuable relationships with film circuit powerhouses like IFP your goals can be achieved.

Speaking at the fast clip of a man on a mission, Chief of Marketing Slava Rubin is clearly passionate about this site and its growth potential.

He and business partners Danae Ringelmann and Eric Schell took their time before launching the venture to seek out filmmakers and ask them about their needs so that they could deliver a tool that actually empowers filmmakers' efforts.

“It’s incredible to see how many projects and how much money has been raised!” exclaims Rubin.

Recently IndieGoGo announced its 1st film to achieve theatrical distribution “Flow: For Love of Water” directed by Irena Salina and produced by Steven Starr, was selected by IndieGoGo to be its first Showcase project and was subsequently selected to World Premiere in competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

There’s no cost to filmmakers or fans to sign up and begin the wonderful task of connecting.  At the request of site participants, the company is in the process of increasing site interactivity and developing widgets and applications for social networks like Facebook.

The influx of suggestions from their users doesn’t scare or worry IndieGoGo founders.

“We’re very excited to know that there’s more demand out there and more opportunities for us to become a more beneficial tool for filmmakers,” says Rubin

More success stories and news can be found on their press page.

If you want to connect with Indie’s in the film industry, IndieGoGo is the place to be.  Musicians sign up and start connecting with filmmakers that may have scoring or soundtrack placement needs.  Writer’s the same goes for you....the possibilities are endless and thankfully in reach thanks to IndieGoGo.Com.
